Research Week Ends with Awards
Faculty, students and administrators gathered to celebrate student research and creativity by honoring student excellence at the Student Awards Breakfast. A culmination of the 2007 Research Week, winners from the Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence, Graduate Research Forum and the Graduate Awards for Excellence were awarded for their outstanding achievements. Guests were welcomed by Dr. Terry Hickey, Vice Provost and Executive Vice President, and opening remarks were made by Dr. Patricia Bishop, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. This year’s distinguished speaker was Dr. Orlando Taylor, Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Dean and Professor of Communications at Howard University. The author of numerous articles, chapters and books, Dr. Taylor has served as a member of numerous national boards and is a leader in graduate education and within his discipline. Dr. Taylor’s presentation focused on the need for students to continue their research and seek interdisciplinary approaches at all time. He also focused on the importance for students and researchers to stay connected across all continents and boundaries and to not limit themselves to their specific field or discipline. Awards were presented by esteemed faculty members and the Graduate Award for Excellence winners spoke briefly about their accomplishments and gave thanks to their advisers, faculty and family.
